Writing Prompt: The Power of Suggestion

Writing Prompt: The Power of Suggestion

“Take suggestion as a cat laps milk.”

—William Shakespeare

As writers, we often resist revision suggestions, even when they come from publishing professionals, such as agents and editors. Just for the heck of it: Take the last note you received from a reader that made you think, “I don’t think so!” and rewrite that scene, that bit of description, that snatch of dialogue.

Remember that the trick is to address the problem with a solution of your own (rather than the reader’s proffered solution).

When you’re finished, put that bit of writing away for at least 24 hours. And then compare the new with the old. What do you think? What did you learn? What can you apply going forward?
