Writing Prompt: Never Start with Weather

Writing Prompt: Never start with weather

Never start with weather.

Of course you know this. Elmore Leonard said it. Every writing teacher you’ve ever had quotes it at you. Leonard was saying it’s a shortcut to start with a storm or a sunny day because it doesn’t make a difference yet in the story. And he’d say it’s better to start with what does make a difference.

And yet weather exists. We care about it. It matters. Your characters’ lives are altered by it—Oh, no, it’s pouring! What’ll we do?

There’s a blizzard! People need coats, and umbrellas, or air conditioning, or sunglasses. So you can’t just leave the weather out.

What would happen if you changed the weather in your book? Open to a chapter. Do you know what the weather is? Hmm. Why not? It exists, doesn’t it?

What would happen if you changed the weather in that scene—might it amp up the tension? Try it!
