Falstaff, Watson, Samwise, Hermione, Chewbacca…are characters so memorable they transcend time and genre. They make us laugh, they make us weep, they make us gasp—at their humor, devotion, and courage.

They might not be the lead or even have a POV, but that doesn’t mean supporting characters don’t play an important role. They do and say things lead characters can’t, won’t or shouldn’t.

But how do we craft a compelling supporting cast and what role should these pivotal and underrated characters play in our narrative?
